Dear Members
Looking back on our 2024-25 lecture programme, we have had some fascinating speakers. In particular, Anne Haworth talking on the Ming dynasty, Joanne Rhymer on tracing the career of the American Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) and Rosamund Bartlett on the Culture of Ukraine—her slides interspersed brilliantly with local music.
Also this season, we had a very interesting Study Day with Chris Aslan talking about ‘Unravelling the Silk Road’. The excellent buffet lunch provided by Victoria Trussler and her team added to the enjoyable and interesting day.
In May we had our outing to Cambridge. Some members visited the Fitzwilliam Museum and others Kettle’s Yard and generally enjoyed the day exploring. Thank you to Pauline for organising the the successful trip. Our year of activities ended with the Radcliffe-on-Trent Carnival mid-July. The weather was very hot which may have deterred some visitors but fortunately our stall was in the shade due to a nearby tree. Thank you to Peter, Lorraine and Russell for the loan of the table and gazebo and to Tessa, Hilary and Martin for helping at the stall. It was lovely to see some of our members there and hopefully we will have encouraged more people to join our society. This year we have an exciting programme of 10 lectures for you starting with Eric Ravilious and the Lure of the Everyday on Wed 1 October 2025. Ravilious (1903-1942) was multi-talented but known for his watercolours and also as a war artist who died on active service.
On 25 March 2026, we shall be offering a Study Day on The Wonders of Ancient Egypt by Gillian Hovell. There will be 3 lectures: 1. Egypt’s Pyramids and Tombs; 2. Temple Traditions and Divine Deities; 3. Egypt’s Ongoing Story.
Gillian Hovell studied Latin and Ancient History at Exeter University and then branched out into archaeology,. Known as the ‘muddy archaeologist’, she is a regular speaker for The Arts Society.
